I know a lot of folks always refer to 'light shaping' tools, I believe the opposite is just as important, which sometimes is forgotten. Light shapes an image, darkness defines it. That's my philosophy. Shape your light, and entice the darkness.
Photography is a combined group of skills. Camera knowledge, artistic understanding, and some would say luck in being in the right place at the right time. I'd rather think that it's good choices and time management that brings you to the right place and time to take that image, combined with the camera knowledge and artistic ability to know exactly what you want to achieve. I'm also a firm believer in 'getting it right in-camera' before considering any editing.
